STEP #1: Keep it clear – Cleanse your skin

The pathway allows the oil to reach the skins surface (outer layer) to form a barrier that prevents the admission of bacteria or other harmful elements. Thus, without a regular cleansing or washing, your skin builds up excessive layers of dirt, grease, and grime that eventually block the hair follicles, making it difficult for the protective sebum to form a barrier. The lack of sebum production leaves the skin exposed to bacteria and inflammation.
In other words? Remember to wash that dirt off before bedtime, kids.
STEP #2: Build a strong barrier
The skin has three layers; stratum corneum, epidermis, and dermis. The skin’s barrier is located in the outermost layer of epidermis – when you cleanse your skin, this is the part you nurture and strengthen. The skin barrier is also known as the moisture barrier as it helps the skin retain moisture. Thus, the skin barrier is an important and necessary guard for the remaining layers and plays a crucial role in keeping away dirt, excess oils, and bacteria – as well as various skin problems, such as dryness, breakouts, and rosacea. When the barrier is healthy and intact, the skin also becomes more efficient in retaining essential moistures.
How can you tell if your skin barrier is damaged? When you notice signs of dryness, redness, inflammation, dehydration, itchiness, or massive pimple formation, it is a sure sign of a damaged skin barrier. This is due to a lack of the protective sebum layer but could also be because of aging. As we get older, the skin slowly loses its ability to absorb and retain moisture.
